Python Job?

Hi, I was looking at the Python Web Development techdegree and I was curious if I am too young to take it. I am almost 16 years old (American). I know there is no minimum age to actually take the techdegree but I am wondering if the techdegree does me any good at my age. Can I even get a Python related job at my age? Any help or wisdom appreciated! Thanks.

You can certainly get a Python job at your age, though you'll probably have to find a company willing to work with you. I have a number of good friends your age that have big positions in the tech industry, so it's definitely possible. Even if you don't get a company to work with you, you could always try freelancing. That's what I've been doing ever since I was also 16 (I'm 18 now). That being said, I would totally learn Python, anyway. All my teachers in both science and math let me use my laptop during class so I could script the whole thing in Python. Your mileage may vary, but they let me write a script that would do all the work for me, and they accepted it as if I had done the work myself. Python is very worth it, no matter your age!

Thanks Michael! I appreciate your feedback, if you don't mind me asking did you learn Python using the tech degree, treehouse classes, or multiple online classes?

The Techdegree thing is a very new program that just came out a couple weeks ago. I learned through the good old regular Treehouse tracks/courses

Ah okay thanks! Have a good day!

Hi Zachary!

First of all, huge props to you for already identifying a passion of yours you'd like to pursue. I mimic what Michael has to say about studying with us- Whether your obtain the skills now at 16 or years later, your knowledge and skillset will make you valuable to someone.

Honestly, I think the earlier you begin the better off you'll be. If you're able to take the Python Techdegree now, you're going to really begin to develop and hone a unique skillset, so when you're an adult and not limited by any potential child labor laws, you're going to be good to go. Even so, as Michael mentioned, you can still likely find a position now, just perhaps it won't be full time, but you'll still be able to make an excellent impression over the next couple years and prove your worth for a full time gig when you're of age.

I hope this helps some! Keep up the hard work.

Thanks for your advice, if you don't mind me asking have you seen more young programmers be successful at internships, part time jobs, or freelancing? I haven't had a job before and outside of school this is the first career path I have pursued this is all new to me. Thanks again!

Really, it's pretty tough to generalize where a young programmer might be successful or less so. There are too many variables at play- the employee, the employer, work atmosphere, expectations, your manager, etc... and this just a few! I may recommend talking to your school counselor about roles that may be available that they know about (or even the school district through a work study type of program).

Yeah I'll talk to my school about it thanks for the advice!

Just adding to the list of resource ideas, AngelList is incredible. They make it really easy to find a job, so much so that the job often finds you. A friend of mine is the CTO of a startup called AutoLotto (a position he took at age 16), and I'm pretty sure he found that job on AngelList
