Question for the veterans. How long did it take you to feel you mastered HTML and CSS?

So far I've made 37 different practice websites after starting team treehouse. I'm by no means great but, I'm getting pretty good. I love to do this, even though I get mad sometimes, and want to punch a hole through my computer screen. It's just neat to take a blank page, and create something that's different every time.

I have a few question for the veterans of HTML and CSS. My first is, do you still have to look things up, or forget something from time to time?. I find myself looking up little things now and then. There's so many rules that it's next to impossible to remember them all. I find that I sometimes struggle with the nth-child, nth-of-type, and few other nth rules. How about you, did you have a hard time with the nth rules? My last question is, was HTML and CSS hard for you to learn, and how many hours a day did you practice? I practice five hours Monday-Friday, and sometimes all day Saturday. I don't think it's really work because it's so much fun to design/develop web sites. I graduate from G.R.C.C. in the fall with a degree in Computer Application Technology. I'm so excited. I plan on selling my house in Holland, Michigan, and trying to get a job in Miami, Florida. It's always been a dream of mine to live in Florida. Thanks in advance for any replies, and please feel free to give some advice to a rookie.

Im not at all a veteran, but I would like to say a few words.

Firstly, you must be very experienced already if you have made 37 websites (I would consider that to be veteran). I have only made about 5 websites (all of which are fully responsive and well made) and I would consider myself to have a very through knowledge of CSS and HTML.

It took me about two months to do the Treehouse tracks on CSS and HTML. After these, I worked on my own projects. I made notes all the way through doing the tracks.. Every developer refers back to their notes or the internet for help at times (particularly when starting out). I forget little bits of syntax every now and then and usually do a quick web search for guidance.

I found these languages not very difficult to learn (compared to languages like Objective-C). It's mainly common sense and learning that you need to be capable of to be an expert in HTML and CSS. On that note, for any goal, if you put the effort in, you can achieve it. You don't need to be super clever to be a programmer. It's all about putting all your effort in and never giving up despite how difficult things get. Every one experiences times where they want to smash their computer in but you just have to relax and think through your problem.

I hope some of this was helpful. I would love to live in Florida!

To answer some more George. I've taken a HTML 5 course in college, and a Adobe Dreamweaver course in college. This site is far better then a college course. I learn thing a little different then most people. I try to do two videos a week, and practice what I've learned by applying it to a new site. I usually will put down on a note card some new HTML5 I learned, I then memorize the code, I try to explain in my mind what each line of HTML does, and then I try to use it on a new site I've created. It's not the most scientific way to do it. But, it works for me. It takes me a little while to complete each section but, I have a better understanding of the concepts.

Everyone learns in different ways!

My sister thought it would be better value to buy a book on web development instead of coming here, but I knew I would fall asleep after 3 pages! For her, the book would probably be easier to learn from.

I agree with you also. I'm very new at coding, but I enjoy it so much that its not work to me at all. I enjoy having something useful to do for a change when I sit down at my Mac. Good luck with everything! Great Topic!

My wife is from Naples Florida. Directly across from Miami. The gulf imo is much better than the Atlantic side. Plus, you can take the Marco Island express and be in Key West in 3 hours!
