quickie question - what is %s referring to within printf?

char eldridge[] = "eldridge"; letter = &eldridge[7]; printf("%c is in %s\n", *letter, eldridge);

%s refers to a c string.

ok when is it used? its kinda confusing me.

its a format specifier. You use it where you want to print a c string (array of characters). Just like you use %d where you want to print an int, %f for float, etc

ohhhhhh ok i see thanks
