Do I need to register as an iPhone developer with Apple before I can even start making my Crystal Ball app?

6,222 PointsHi you can just install Xcode from the mac app store. Though you need to register to sell a app on the app store so long story short yes you can.

3,919 PointsNo, you are able to use Xcode to start developing applications without registering. However, you will be unable to connect your devices to Xcode to run them. Basically, you will only be able to run your apps through a simulator made available through Xcode. For purposes of the Treehouse Series on iOS Development, you probably don't need to register for the Crystal Ball app section (even though there is a section in the Crystal Ball app lessons that will work with debugging on an actual device - you can watch the videos and still get the just of what they are getting at), but you will probably want to register as a developer before you start working on the "Creating a Self Destructing Messaging App" because that app will be working with camera functions that are not runnable on the simulator. I would recommend registering if you seriously plan to develop iOS applications after these courses, but you could probably avoid it if you are just seeing what it is all about.

1,963 PointsThanks everyone. When I opened a new project in Xcode and inputted my apple ID and info it gave me an error message saying it doesn't recognize my name as a registered developer. I ignored the message and I was able to continue with the crystal ball project.
