I have always heard that a resume needs to be one page. As a designer, I see this as an opportunity to showcase some design skills. Is going over a page crazy talk. If not, how long is too long?

2,401 PointsI would limit your physical resumé to 1 page. Having worked at an ad agency, I've had the opportunity to interview dozens of candidates including creatives like yourself. Tailor your resumé for each company and position that you apply for. Be sure to remove any unrelated or unnecessary experience, education etc. It is easy to introduce complexity, but distilling the content to only what is important and conveying clarity of thought is much harder. This is an essential trait that I look for in designers.
Here are some additional tips based on my own experience. Hopefully it adds some value:
- Your email cover letter will heavily influence whether your resumé is even considered. Spend some time to differentiate yourself here.
- For creative positions, I often spent less than a minute going over the resumé initially; I am usually more interested in work you have done. Having a website that accurately highlights your design chops will go a far way.
- On interview day, there will be people who may be seeing your resumé for the first time. Having a 1 pager is easy to digest and quickly reference.
- Depending on your design medium, you should present your work in a physical or digital viewbook (An interactive view book on an iPad for example is a nice touch and can be created very easily with iBooks Author or InDesign.)
Good luck!
