I can create my parameter with function returnValue(str) {}. return str, will store that value. but when I add the var echo = returnValue(); I seem to be losing something. please help my brain understand this.

script.js
function returnValue(str) {
  return str;
  var echo = returnValue("whats up");
}

As soon as your code hits the return it stops running and returns to the calling code, meaning it never reaches the echo statement. Put the echo statement before the return.
