Ruby Job Openings?

Not sure this discussion belongs here. I've been learning Ruby for the past few weeks and still have a long way to go. Today I did a light job research and to my surprise I didn't find a pile of open positions. I am enjoying learning Ruby, it's a challenge, but I would like to get a job in the field once I'm done, so should I switch tracks to something with greater demand? Anybody can pitch in some light into this?

There may not be many positions for Ruby but there will be be positions for Ruby on Rails. Rails is a framework which uses the ruby programming language to create web applications. The path I took was that I learned Ruby, then did the treehouse courses on Rails, then I started to make my own websites with Rails

Great, yes, I'm learning Ruby on Rails. Thank you :)

Hi Priscilla,

We're also trying to actively help Students find jobs now, so feel free to talk to Kristen Badal about this. I've copied her in here.

Thanks for being a Treehouse Student!

Cheers, Ryan

Hi Ryan,

That's good to know. I'm not ready yet but when the time comes I'll be knocking on every door.

The instructors at Treehouse are excellent, especially Nick Pettit!

Thank you!!

Priscilla

Hi Priscilla,

Just to echo Ryan, we're here for you when you're ready to start the job search! In the meantime, since you're just starting out, I would recommend finishing up the Ruby track and getting as much real world experience as possible; either building apps for friends or local businesses [or even a mock company!]. There are tons of Ruby/Rails opportunities out there, so the more you practice, the better chance you have of landing a great position. Of course, feel free to check out our Career Resources Center at http://teamtreehouse.com/career-resources for more tips, or email me directly at Kristen@teamtreehouse.com.

Keep crushing it! Kristen
