<select> element

How to give padding to "default" option of select menu. The default option is on the very left of select menu and I want to give it some padding on it left. I tried everything like padding-left , margin-left but it didn't work . I inspected "chrome dev tools" but got nothing. What's the problem here . Please help.

You may have the wrong selector. Are you targeting the option or the select?
