General Discussion

SEO: When searching for my website on google it brings up the event page before the home index page. How to change ?

Is there a way to hide the other pages from a search engine results but keep their seo power and re-direct the viewer to just the home page.

There is not much or any text on the home page so dont want any of the other pages to loose seo just want them to combine and show the home page for the visitor to begin on.

Hope this makes sense..

James,

Is your websites goal to have folks register to events? Would more visitors register to these events if they land on the homepage first?

I would suggest adding some additional content to those event pages and perhaps maybe a "Go To Our Homepage For More Info!" button. I would hate for you to lose your web pages ranking power.

You do have the option to add a "301 redirect" and it would pass 90% - 99% of its link juice, however, you might lose some of the ranking power.

Hey Cristian,

Thanks for reply, it's not that people would register more with events if landing on the home page, however if you imagine treehouse for example, if i was to search team treehouse on google and the first page that came up was teamtreehouse.com/html instead of teamtreehouse.com then it would be less professional and you could worry the viewer is not getting the full story and goal of the website. This is what has happened with me, so I'm I correct in thinking if I did a 301 redirect when the viewer clicks on say teamtreehouse.com/html (on google) then it would take me to teamtreehouse.com and not loose any seo power on any of the two pages just redirects the viewer.

Regards, James

Google's results and algorithms often change to accompany what the user is searching for, but you might also check out some SEO blogs.

Hey Dustin,

I understand that search engines are trying to please the end user's search parameters.

However as a business you want to give a good impact towards your customer, and not always content wins customers; it is also an experience, especially with a website where a dynamic and multimedia window is available to explain to your customer what you're about.

It is a tricky one, firstly with not much content and more media on the site I could robot not follow on all pages except home page but then loose seo power and maybe not be found at all. Or Continue as I'am and loose the websites experience as customers are landing on pages maybe not understood without going to the home page first.

Looking back it would of been a good idea designing the site on one page and therefore having all the content, which is very little along with the media all on one target page.

Anyway thanks, James

I think this mainly happens when a website is new. If you don't have much content on your homepage, that could be one reason. I've had this happen for a few websites as well, but keep in mind it doesn't always stay the same and as you get more established it will most likely correct itself. You might get setup in webmaster tools and check for crawl errors. Google has been known to change titles when it comes to relevancy and they are constantly doing different things. The Moz Forum might be able to provide a better answer for now.

Thanks, makes sense and will check moz out!
