Hi, the challenge asks that 'totalScore' be set to the same as 'initialScore'. If you put the increment at the end, it is added after the assignment, putting it in front increments before assigning.

If you break it down, it is like this:

var initialScore = 8

let totalScore = initialScore++ // totalScore = initialScore, then add 1 to initialScore
// totalScore = 8
// initialScore = 9

let totalScore = ++initialScore   // totalScore = (add 1 to initialScore)
// totalScore = 9
// initialScore = 9
