4,902 PointsShow and Tell: I built a web app! What do you think of it?
Hi everyone,
Short version: I built a web app Resamazing.com using what I learned from Treehouse. It's basically like SquareSpace for hosting resume websites. I'd love your feedback on it!
Long version: I've been a Treehouse student since January 2012. I've always dreamed of building my own web app. I wanted to build something that could really help people. I thought it best to use my modest design talent to help people look their best for potential employers. So I decided on providing people an easy way to create a good looking resume website.
I watched dozens of hours of Treehouse video and hundreds of hours designing the app and templates. I would not have been able to do this without Treehouse, which has been a Godsend.
I've been working on Resamazing for almost two years now. About a year ago, I reached a point to where I needed to bring in some extra development help. My friend Jeremy graciously jumped in to help me. Since we partnered up, the development of the app has been much quicker and smoother. He too has been a Godsend.
There's still a lot of work that needs to be done. A lot of UX enhancements are needed (I'll be watching those videos very soon). We're also adding more features and templates to the app.
For now, we're focusing on getting user feedback. So if any of my fellow Treehouse-ers would like to critique the app, I'm all ears!
A special thank you to Treehouse: Without you, my dream to build my own web app would never have happened. I particularly want to thank the following:
Nick Pettit - Your easy to follow teaching is what got me hooked on Treehouse way back in 2012. You are an excellent teacher. Jason Seifer - Your Ruby tutorials opened up a whole new world for me. And you made a lot of that confusing code make sense. If you're ever in the Nashville area again, you have an open beer tab on me. :) Jim Hoskins - I would never have understood how to install Ruby without watching your Console Foundation videos. Also, the earliest HTML videos with you and Nick were priceless. Allison Grayce Marshall - Your videos on Photoshop were incredibly helpful. And your advice on organizing files into assets, docs, etc. was super helpful. Sometimes it's the smallest things that have such a huge impact. Ryan Carson - You have been a huge inspiration to me ever since your days at Carsonified. Thank you for creating Think Vitamin which eventually turned into Treehouse.
I don't know what's going to become of Resamazing. Hopefully, it'll be successful. But if it's not, I still have everything I've learned from Treehouse. I can go and build anything I want. As Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said, "Life is a journey, not a destination."
Thanks guys!

33,856 Pointsi like the simple one-page design but I haven't yet explored the app. The idea itself sounds unique and probably has a potential to become something more. The only thing that I was hung on was the name. It took me a minute to figure out (without reading more) what the name actually meant.
Just off the top of my head, what about something like resumaze.io (it's available).
I could probably think of some more names but that was the first thing I noticed. Hope it helps.

Yeah, there are a few things I'm thinking of improving. The name being one of them.
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. It's really helpful!

33,856 PointsSure, no problem. I really like the idea actually and I've never been a fan of LinkedIn. I suppose my ideas on this are more from a marketing perspective. But I feel you'd have more success if you also offered a free version with the option to upgrade to more advanced resume hosting features. I'm sure you could take this quite further — maybe like a tech-savvy and more intuitive and modern LinkedIn for web designers or tech people even. That would also give you a more refined niche. These are just rough ideas but it's sort of the direction I was thinking in.

Really nice. I like the design of the front page. It's obvious you really know your stuff and it gives me hope I can get to your level one day. I just tried it and it seems simple enough.
With that here begins my constructive criticism (just my humble opinions):
One thing you don't want to do is overload people too many forms. People on the web these days have such short attention spans that by the 5th page of filling out forms I was getting impatient. So maybe you can figure out a way to just add a skip to end button after the first or second form.
Also, if you get a chance I would like to enter multiple schools for education.
The font seems kind of huge with the standard resume template that I wasn't a big fan of scrolling down so much just to see a simple resume.
Any way you can add a section for articles or papers for people who publish in journals, conferences, etc?
$3.75 a month seems really pricey for a service I might need to update less than 10 times a year. Most of the time it’s a parking place for a few MB of data especially since there is free webhosting out there and LinkedIn and other resume sites are also free. I’d rather pay an initial upfront fee and have lifetime sharing with the option to pay for upgrades.
Really good start though. I wish you luck.

4,902 PointsAll good points Phillip!
You actually can skip sections by pressing continue. But we should point that out more.
I'm definitely looking into adding more features. I'll begin by adding those that are the most requested by users. But a portfolio section is definitely on that list.
Pricing is something that will continue to evolve.
Thanks for taking your time to help me out! Much appreciated.

1,340 PointsIn general I like the site and the idea.
A couple things I hope you find constructive.
Create an export utility. Many employers still need a resume uploaded on their site and this would help link a website with something a user can utilize for job searching.
Create an import utility. If I have a resume, try to parse it and create the site for me.
Create a short video to entice users to action. Doesn't have to be anything special, but let me know why I care about having a web-based resume and how your tool helps me compared to my current resume and process.
Finally, I agree with Phillip Poon about the pricing. There's a lot better networks for resumes. Indeed has a service. LinkedIn has their profile which is effectively a resume. How do you differentiate yourself from them and their free services?
Think about the problem people with resumes face today. They want to get found and break through resume filters. They want to be matched with relevant jobs. They want to know the keywords that recruiters are searching for and how to get those skills.

You're right about getting my differentiating factor out there. Currently, I consider the app to be supplementary to a traditional resume. We are not meant to replace it but to enhance your professional appearance. But who knows what our future may hold. :)
Thank you good sir!

1,340 PointsI forgot to add Good Luck!
PS: Treehouse seems like a great place to understand your potential customers.
I don't know if this would break the rules here, but try to talk with a few job seekers on the forum about the problems they face. Solve that problem with your website and it will be a hit. Product Management 101 (my day job).
One of my favorite sayings is 'fall in love with the problem, not the solution.'

4,902 PointsOh wow, thanks Dustin! I've never heard of Dunked. That's some good inspiration there.
Thanks for the encouragement and good idea Ryan!
