SQL - Why must the primary key be an INTEGER instead of an INT?

If you set the primary key as an INT, it will not auto-generate the numbers when you insert the data. Eg:

CREATE TABLE contacts(
id INT PRIMARY KEY,
firstname STRING,
lastname STRING,
email STRING,
phone INT(10))

INSERT INTO CONTACTS (firstname , lastname, email, phone)
VALUES('Chris', 'Ramacciotti' , 'rama@teamtreehouse.com', 7735554535),
      ('James', 'Gosling' , 'james@java.com', 555557788)

So why must it be an INTEGER for it to auto-generate the numbers?
