2,286 PointsThe WordPress 1 step install is so easy! Is there any reason/benefit in knowing the 5 minute install?
Just wondering why the manual install is important as opposed to 1 step install.

Another thing to know is that there are various types of hosting control panels, there are also other types of hostings. Cpanel is one of the types of hosting control panels, there are hostings without cpanel. So it is good to have a 2nd option for more flexibility.

Treehouse Guest TeacherIf you're looking to become a WordPress Developer here are a few other reasons it's good to know:
- Local dev usually involves manual install
- Migrating sites is much like installing manually and it's good to know the install process when you're migrating a site
- Some hosting providers might not offer 1 click install (mostly larger or more stripped down powerful servers)
That said, you can definitely get by making sites without needing to know this. Plus, you can always look it up if you ever need ;p

11,448 PointsZac- just a note that it would be helpful if you noted we do not need to do both the 1 minute install and the 5 minute during the tutorial. It was not clear, I did both and was confused when I went to create a database and there was one already there. :-)

2,286 PointsThanks very much everyone. It also seems that to create a child theme you need to know how to work with the ftp software. Since I did the one click install, I don't even know how to access that. I'm in over my head already!

24,409 PointsI feel the same way! I installed the one click method and I am having troubles setting up the child theme via Zac's "How to make child theme tutorial"

28,149 PointsYes, I agree with Gloria. I don't use the one-step install just so I can set db passwords myself, give the WP tables a custom prefix, and make sure the keys in the cofig file are properly salted. All of this helps with security.

2,286 PointsI ended up with the one click install. Then I followed the instructions for setting up ftp, creating a child theme, etc.
I had to call GoDaddy and found out where my files were on my CPanel--then things made sense! I see where everything is now.
