Treehouse TeacherThere's a new Python Basics in the Library! But wait there's more....
Howdy Pythonistas!
I'm very happy to announce that this morning we released a refresh of Python Basics and an extra special bonus course called Introducing Lists.
Refreshes are something we here at Treehouse take very seriously. We are constantly working on ensuring y'all are getting the best learning experience possible. Our teaching methodology is ever evolving and we do our best to keep pace with the advancements in the learning science movement. When we do a refresh, we gather all the feedback from our wonderful students and apply the necessary changes to content, quizzes and code challenges. If you have provided feedback on our content, please let me take a moment and send a huge thank you and a high five your way. Your feedback helps us to continue to improve our courses, please keep those comments coming!
This release marks the third edition of Python Basics, and my first Python course. If you are familiar with me, you might be thinking to yourself, "Wait isn't that the Java teacher? What's he doing here?" Well first off, I'm a polyglot, I just happen to teach Java. Secondly, before taking the job here at Treehouse, I spent about a decade in the Python world developing, architecting and leading a team of Python developers. It feels so good to be back.
As you know, Kenneth has done a bonkers good job with the Python content here on Treehouse. Dr. Love and I remain close friends, and I hope to carry forward his love for both Python and dad jokes. He keeps telling me I need to stop trimming my beard.
I had a lot of fun putting these courses together, and I hope you enjoy them as well. Please let me know your thoughts on the courses...and all things Python!

242,770 PointsThe lists course is neat! It's always great to have multiple sources to reinforce and expand on important concepts, particularly from the perspectives of different teachers.
I'm wondering about the changes in the Basics course. Will the other one be retired? And is the content essentially the same, and just presented differently to improve clarity; or are there differences in the material, possibly due to the evolution of the language?

17,429 PointsReally wish I had waited to start the python basics course now. I'm really deep into the 2015 course... well on the shopping list app but I don't want to stop and repeat myself and risk getting lost. Where would a good place to stop do you think and where should I pick up your newer course?
Thanks! :)

Craig Dennis
Treehouse TeacherFinish the shopping list and then head over ;) I actually build that same shopping list in the second course Introducing Lists.
I pulled Lists out of Python Basics (per student feedback).
You should be fine, I am refreshing the content, so the base topic area is the same.
Looking forward to "seeing" you soon Kris!

7,779 PointsWill you be updating Python Collections too? The pace it moves at, especially when it comes to the dungeon game has really killed my motivation. I feel like I have really hit a brick wall and I'm trying to not give up

7,779 PointsHi Craig Dennis,
I turned down the update as I am worried I will never be able to see my old work (basics 2015) again if I accepted the update, would that happen? Or will Treehouse have the old course stored in my account or something?
I've nearly finished Collections but don't mind going back to doing the basics again to see what has been changed!
Thanks!

242,770 PointsYour old workspaces will be saved. The course itself will remain available until they retire it, but not after that.

To add to the great advice Steven gave you, I'd encourage you to finish Basics 2015 if you haven't already before doing the new one. All your Treehouse points will be retained once the course is retired :)

7,779 PointsHi,
Will collections be replaced also??

Craig Dennis
Treehouse TeacherHi Youssef!
Yes most likely everything in the library will eventually be refreshed. Python Collections is definitely next on the list of refreshes.
We are currently building out a data science track, but will swing back here shortly and reassess.
Thanks for asking!

Treehouse TeacherThanks Steven!
Yes we will be retiring the basics course and the new Basics course will be in tracks and Techdegrees.
The content is essentially the same just spread out differently, and at a slightly different pacing (as per content feedback suggestions!)
Thanks again!
