Thinking about unsubscribing unless I find some answers to these problems that have bugged me for months

I have literally downloaded the exact code from the project files for both ODOT and Treebook and have never received the correct response for my issues.

  1. ODOT is still not behaving correctly with my secret. yml files. I have tried everything people recommend, but I still cant get the rails server running.

note copying new rake secret codes into test and development does NOTHING

  1. treebook is not letting me start my server
An error occurred while installing pg (0.17.1), and Bundler cannot continue.
Make sure that `gem install pg -v '0.17.1'` succeeds before bundling.

No matter how much I try to install PG it wont let me.

I have both projects up on my github, and I could really use some help here.

overall I am a tad frustrated that this is the only rails material that has been posted in the past year or so. I admire the goals of this site, but am beginning to think my $25/month is best spent elsewhere if we rubyists are only treated to introduction lessons on loops etc. Far too much material has leaned towards absolute beginner, and the rate of output has been sluggish for someone trying to break into the industry.

I can fully identify with your frustration, broheme, because you sound exactly like I did about 3 months ago; I'd been slogging away at some of the pure Ruby tutorials here (many of which are badly made) and wasn't getting the help I wanted on this site.

Fast-forward a few months later to now, and I'm not frustrated with this site anymore, and I'm still subscribed. A few tips:

  1. Make sure you use the 'ask people' function when you post a question.
  2. You can email Treehouse if you're not getting answers. Sometimes takes them a few days (they work a 4-day week), but they usually get back to you eventually with a good answer. However, this is often not fast enough.
  3. Use Stack Overflow.
  4. Do the One Month Rails tutorial https://onemonth.com (it's worth the money) and/or
  5. Do Michael Hartl's Rails Tutorial. It's SUPERB. (I did both). https://www.railstutorial.org/book/
  6. Join Ruby on Rails facebook groups.
  7. ADD ME TO FACEBOOK! :-) (you can find the link in my profile). I'm always looking for Rails learners to bounce off.

I now just dip in and out of this website. It's excellent for that and for keeping your finger on the pulse, particularly for front-end stuff (you DO need all that, too - it's unavoidable).

Rails does get easier, but only a little bit easier, because the learning never stops.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Does the one month rails tutorial have a lot of repetition from Michael Hartl's famous book, or do you recommend both because they both teach unique concepts?

I think I added you on fb, unless your profile is not that of a summo-wrestler outfit haha.
