Is this what you are looking for? Your original code has quite a few tags missing and what seems to be the remnants of a closing list item tag. I think your original code might not be displaying the way you want it to. You might try using markdown.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>Nick Pettit | Designer</title>
  </head>
  <body>
    <header>
      <a href="index.html">
        <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>
        <h2>Designer</h2>
      </a>
      <ul>
        <li><a href="index.html">portfolio</a></li>
        <li><a href="about.html">about</a></li>
        <li><a href="contact.html'>contact</a></li>
      </ul>
    </header>
  <section>
    Gallery will go here.
