I did : SELECT * FROM STUDENTS WHERE LAST_NAME <= "M"; this worked aswell

Testing for <= "M" will not include names beginning with "M". Just check your result set and you will see that the last name is "Lowery", and no "M" names are included.

But you can simplify the filter to a single test, since there are no possible letters that come before "A":

SELECT * FROM STUDENTS WHERE LAST_NAME < "N"
