Time it takes to go through Treehouse

This is a slightly random question. My company is in the process of starting an incentive program for employees. I recently signed up for Treehouse myself but I'm pushing to get my company to pay for it. My manager needs to know how long it takes to go through lessons.

Obviously if I were able to spend eight hours a day with Treehouse I would get through it faster. Does anyone have any advice on how I can approach this with my company?

Thanks!

Every one has their own learning curve, it also depends on

  • The program you want to do
  • How comfortable currently you are with the technology you want to learn

As far the tutorials are concerned, I personally feel that treehouse has done a great job in making sure that you grasp the concept and learn faster. More over the tutorials are interactive, fun and as simple as they could be. At the end of the day you will definitely take away a lot which will benefit your company.

Hi Abhay,

Thanks for responding! I am definitely sticking with Treehouse with or without my company. I think it is the best source for learning code online.

I'm just hoping I can convince my boss to get on board as well!

The Flat Iron School uses Treehouse for their prep work, their website use to list an estimate in hours for each course. They've since removed it from their live site, probably because it can vary widely.

If you are interested you can check it out via github file history

Thanks for this post, James! Awesome resource!

Just log in at work and show him a few lessons.

Hi Jessie, This is just an approximation, but i think it should at least give you an estimate. Almost all projects at treehouse have on an average 5 stages. Each stage again has about 4-5 videos. Each video is about 9 minutes long (average). So that would mean a student requires at least 45 mins per stage and about 3.5 hrs per project. I agree this is not an exact figure, but if you were to average out all of the courses available on treehouse, it would probably take that much time (considering the intermediate and advanced courses. The basic ones should take about 2 hrs). Hope that gives you some info to approach your boss :)

I am not sure as to how much time I have spent working through the lessons because I do not time myself but here is some insight that I can give. I have just recently finished my Associate of Science degree in Web Design & Interactive Media the other week and I am learning things that I never learned while working on my degree which to me is a plus. The courses here provide a more in depth explanation of the different aspects of design and development that I didn't get from my own instructors at my school. Furthermore it is also more relevant to modern web design and development principles than the curriculum that I had to go through to get my degree. The estimated time it takes users to get through I would say drastically is dependent on how easily each person picks up the information and learns how to implement it. This can be said with most things and I say this because of knowing how different the understanding of this stuff was in my college courses. For someone like me it doesn't take long to pick up the information but for those who may struggle with the concepts it may take them a little longer. Everyone has their own learning curve as well as learning style.

Very true Jason. I agree completely. But in order to at least pitch it to her boss, Jessie will have to give some sort of ball park figure. Maybe her experience should be proof enough to take it to the management. My answer assumes similar learning curve and mainly takes into account the average time per project because that is the only information we have. It was just an attempt to give a ball park estimation :)

Thank you, Vijay! I appreciate your estimations and I think they will be very helpful :D

Jessie Charbonneau - I'd say one hour per badge and there are 46 badges (by quick count) for the Become a Web Designer.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate all the great answers!
