Treehouse for iPad

Today we are really excited to share Treehouse for iPad. Our goal was to bring as much of the Treehouse experience as we could to your mobile device so you can continue to learn from wherever you're most comfortable.

With this initial release you're able to view your profile, points, and badges you've earned. You can explore the library or pick up where you left off on your current courses. Our videos, quizzes and code challenges have been completely optimized for the iPad.

What's Next

We have a few features we are planning including forums, push notifications, and the ability to download videos and watch them offline.

Where's Android?

Unfortunately Apple would not approve our App unless we removed all Android content. We are really sorry that you won't be able to start any Android stages or learning adventures.

If you have any questions or comments about the iPad app, feel free to contact me @mwhuss.

To download the App visit http://teamtreehouse.com/ipad

-- Marshall & Griffin

I am considering getting an IPad Mini, is the mini version powerful enough to run the Team Treehouse app and video etc.

Nicholas Dixon Yes it is. The iPad App currently supports iPad 2+ running iOS 7.1+.

Will there be iPad pro support? I guess I'm looking more for split screen support in iOS 9

Thanks, Jason

When people with android devices gonna get an app for team treehouse as well?

I would like to 2nd that request. :-)

Thankfully our website is responsive, and students can always download the Android videos for their mobile devices.

I 3rd that request! We tackled iOS first because it made more sense based on the usage we see and expect, but we would love to have an Android app too, of course! It's good to hear that students feel the same!

I also am interested in an Android version. I can watch the videos in the mobile Chrome browser, and the quizzes work, but the code challenges do not work.

I am also curious if Google will require the removal of the iOS content if/when the android. I doubt it, but I guess that is how Apple works. They are ok with education as long as it is not for Android. ...interesting perspective!

I meant to say

...if/when the android app is released.

Is there a way to modify our comments in this forum after they are submitted.

The Play store restrictions aren't, to my knowledge, anywhere near as strict and open to misinterpretation as Apple's are... but Marshall Huss knows more about that than I do :)

As for modifying comments - you should have an "Edit" icon underneath each of your posts. Is it not showing up for you? If not please get in touch with support (help@teamtreehouse.com) and they'll help you get it sorted - it could just be a bug on our end :)

I would also like to see an Android app. :)

4th'd, 5th'd? I lost count :-). I too would like an android version.

Android please! Here in South Africa we use mainly samsung products with the android os. I know only of two people is my network that use an ipad. The rest of us use the galaxy tab or s3 - s4 smartphones.(mainly thanks to the deals the majority of our service providers offer upon upgrade of our contracts )

+1 to an Android app. I'll be pushing hard for it!

Great App!! Thank you! Use it while typing on ST2. Any suggestions on how to move HTML and CSS along with Treehouse files from Window's hard drive to Diet Coda App on iPad?

I +1 the request for an android app. While it's possible to use treehouse through the browser on my Tab2, it's not very user friendly when watching videos and going through a learning adventure or project.

if (AndroidVersion === true) { Bob = "Very Happy Indeed"; } else { Bob = "Still waiting patiently"; }

Also known as +1 for Android Request!!

So great!

Apple never ceases to amaze me.

This is awesome news though! I would love to be able to continue my deep dives when I'm away from home but have my iPad with me. Thanks for working hard to provide us with this opportunity!

I was all excited to download it on my first-gen iPad, then I click download and guess what? "This app requires iOS6". Anyways, impressive work guys, the app looks amazing judging on the screenshots I saw.

Yeah I also only have a first gen so it kind of stinks :(

Hey, awesome news. But will there be an iPhone App? :)

+1

+1, impressive work though

OMMGGGG MY DREAM CAME TRUE ;D

Woohoo finally! Thank you Treehouse!

Yeah!

Great news! I can now use teamtreehouse on the go! However, I noticed one issue when I mistype my password. Error will seem to loop infinity and only way to make it stop is to exit the app and restart it.

Thanks for letting us know, I'll look into it.

I deployed a fix to the API to hopefully fit the infinite login loop. If you login and are immediately logged out it means your account it paused. Un-pause your account to access the content.

Just wanted to say thank you guys!! Glad I can work on my learning adventures in an optimized mobile environment!

Hi treehouse! Will the app work on iOS7? I tried to open it and it crashes every time. Thanks!

I have got it running, but it needs some tweaking. A near future update should get it working on iOS 7.

I can't get it to run on iOS7 either. Open and crash...

Yea, known issue. I'm hoping some changes in beta 3 fix the crashes.

Awesome! Congrats on the app. I'm really excited about it!

beta 5 and still crashing :-/ umpf

v1.0.1 has already been submitted to the app store, just waiting for it to get approved!

i can't believe the app doesn't work perfectly with a BETA OS.

Awesome job, guys! Really well designed, and it's going to be great to learn on my iPad.

For all the iOS 7 testers- it does crash upon startup, so that doesn't work. I'm sure it'll be fixed at some point :)

Ohh man you have no idea how happy I am about this!!!!! It's almost to pathetic to say :D

Yes! Thanks a lot!

I like the log in 1Password link. Never seen that before :)

We're glad you found it

I had no intentions to buy an iPad but I need one now :D

Woohoo!

Hi guys the app looks great but I'm not getting any sound when I watch the videos

Hey Joe. Go take a quiz and answer a question. Do you hear a sound after selecting an answer?

Hey Marshall, no sound after doing the above I'm afraid :(

OK, just to make sure. Is your iPad muted (toggle switch on the side) or the volume really low?

I took another quiz and it seems to have sorted itself out. The mute button was the first thing I checked before posting :-p thanks for the quick response dude

Glad to hear it! No problem, let me know if you need anything else. Hit me up on twitter or send an email to [help@teamtreehouse.com](help@teamtreehouse.com) and it will get to me.

Just what I needed!

Awesome job guys, love a native app. It's clean and simple and does what it needs. Is it only 4.1MB too?

+1 for 1Password

You're correct, 4.1 MB

And :+1: to you for using 1Password!

That's phenomenal, I thought I'd misread it. :-)

Only need to remember one password now - ?\

Amazing!!!!! Great job!

Fantastic! do you guys have an app for iPhones & iPods ?

Not yet.

Thanks!

I have been slowly working through the Deep Dives on my iPad mini, code challenges have been fun... This should make things a lot easier! Great work Team Treehouse, thank you.

I'm really glad you like it!

Apple sucks, making you remove Android content... so unprofessional lol

They're probably trying to get more ios developers by keeping everyone away from android content. :smirk:

Sneaky lol I think they're afraid of the Rise of Android lol

+1. Boo to Apple for that decision. lol

Guys guys...it's all about business...protecting your investment and bigger profit margins. Apple didn't get where they are at by being nice. lol

BUT...I did make another post that seems like another popular online tutorial company with an iPad app has Android content...so maybe there's a loop hole somewhere?

Other updates Hopefully on the roadmap:

1) Pull to refresh - some way to update status on completed deepdives. (i.e. progress bar on deep dive poster image, making badge go form monochrome to color). I am not referring to individual sessions, but the parent package.

All the status updates actually happen in the background, no need to pull and refresh. If you complete a stage, the badge will automatically turn to color.

Good News :D

Brilliant, thank you!

Cool. I normally watch / learn from Treehouse using Chrome on iOS. What value does a native app provide over your Web site?

I notice that the videos load quicker, plus there is an addition of the <> / " tags button that is readily available on-screen, so you don't have to go back and forth to put these in the code via the iPad keyboard (which was very annoying).

We believe in order to get the absolute best user experience you have to go with a native app.

Marshall Huss — Noticed your link to your twitter profile is trying to point to a relative link since it isn't prefixed with http://

Thanks, fixed!

Sad to see a company especially one focused on education releasing for only iOS in the year 2013.... thankfully now a days these companies are few and far between!

Also strange that Pluralsight for example didn't have to remove their Android content from their Ipad app? Maybe it's possible to stand up against Apples pathetic business practices instead of just bending over....well who knows?!

Jens Bremar - I don't think we're allowed under Apple's NDA to really discuss details, but I will say that it is their store - if they say that we can't publish the app without making the changes, the only way we can "not bend over" is to not publish the app.

How did you manage to deploy this app when the developer and itunes connect site has been down for over a week due to a hack? o.0 You must be the only one I've hear of deploying an app recently! Congratulations on the release, I look forward to using it!

We had submitted before the Apple dev portal issues.

No go for people with iPad 1's for those who are wondering. I'm left in the dark :( ... haha glad you guys finally released it though!

"Where's Android?

Unfortunately Apple would not approve our App unless we removed all Android content. We are really sorry that you won't be able to start any Android stages or learning adventures."

Does this happen often with Apple?

If you've experienced a crash while logging in (sorry about that!) it's because your account is currently paused. I have deployed a fix to the API which prevents the app from crashing, but you will be immediately logged out until you un-pause your account. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Would be great but there is no sound on videos

Silly question Rossa Shanks, but... are you sure your iPad isn't muted?

Is there a Windows 8 App in the mix? :P Sort of wishing I didn't sell my iPad now... maybe I'll go grab a mini. Looks real nice, good job... you all never cease to amaze me.

Odd on Apple not approving your App if it had Android content. I subscribe to another very well known online video tutorial company that has an iPad app...and when I open up the app to search for "Android", it return all their Android video tutorial, just FYI! :)

Also, will you be able to add in a buttons for directional navigation (back/foward/up/down) since apple doesn't have that during character input. I do love that you add the on-screen tags (<> / ""), makes all the difference!

"It's all I ever wanted!"

SUPER exciting! Thanks Treehouse! :)

Good news! Thanks guys!

Great!!!!!! Finally Treehouse on my ipad ! Thanks !!!

That's great news, I'll have to try it out at some point. It seems very petty of Apple not to approve the app unless you removed the Android tutorials considering you quite heavily push their products on this site.

I've got the app running on iOS 7b4. Some code needs to be refactored but I'm hoping to include them in the v1.0.1 update.

UPDATE: I've got it working and it will definitely be in the next release

Great news! When can we expect this update? :)

I'm interested in the expected update date as well. Can't wait to be able to use this app!

I'm hoping to have it wrapped up by the end of this week/early next week. Then once submitted to Apple it will take ~6 days for review.

I love the app! much easier to watch the videos on my iPad and do all the coding on my computer. Thanks guys!

I love the app! One request would be to add the Chromecast button so I can watch it on my TV! Thanks.

Congrats Guys and Girls.. Just downloaded and i'm impressed, this is going to make learning a whole lot easier.

If this has already been said here then I apologize but there has been a lot of feedback. I only discovered this today while using the App and then sitting down at my computer after I got home to pick up where I left off. In the Learning Adventures the modules appear in a different order through the Treehouse App than they do on the website. For example: on the Treehouse App the "Become a Web Designer" adventure starts with "How to Market Your Business" instead of "Build a Simple Website." I also noticed similar issues with the Ruby on Rails adventure. It makes it rather difficult to pick up where you left off and I believe the teachers at Treehouse put the modules in the order that they are because they build on each other. The Treehouse App has us building a Ruby on Rails application before we learn how to build a simple website, but the web site has a different order. If there is a way to keep the order the same that would be great!

Thanks for reporting this, already fixed and will be in v1.0.1.

Doesn't work on First Gen iPad. =(

I've been using the App and i'ts fantastic !

Oh. My. Heavens. Thank you for this wonderful app! It's really great! Now I can have the tutorial off to the side on my iPad and using my full screen of my Mac to write code and complete projects. Perfect!

Thanks!

This doesn't really work for me, because I have a 1st gen ipad and this app requires ios 6.0 or higher. Any chance this might change? It looks like a great app!

No, there are no plans to support the iPad 1. The app heavily depends on some APIs that are only available in iOS 6.

No problem. Thanks for the quick response!

Been looking forward to this for a while!

v1.0.1 has been released in the app store. Thanks to everyone for reporting any issues! If you've tried out the app and have a few minutes we'd love for you to leave a review in the app store.

Changes

  • Now supports iOS 7
  • Fixed display issue where Quiz Questions showed HTML
  • Learning Adventures are now sorted in the correct order
  • Profiles now show the correct "Joined" date
  • Retired badges are now hidden
  • Fixed issue with points chart

Now, will be really great if we can have offline videos. :)

We're working on it

The offline videos option would be awesome but I always get an error when trying to use it. I know the code challenges will not work offline but the videos should I always get a connectivity error model box on top of the playing video never works for me plus It makes more sense for ann iPad to be able to ONE click to have the app download a section at a time without having to go into each video to do so its kind of annoying.

The first iteration of downloading videos is just a sign of more to come. We are planning on allowing entire stages to be downloaded but we want to make sure we do it right. There are lots of cases like lack of disk space, bandwidth, are you on data instead of LTE. But I did want you to know we're working on it :-)

If you're having issues with playing videos that are already downloaded please send contact support and the ticket will make its way to me.

Love that this exists! I second the above that the download video for offline viewing option is pretty buggy- Usually only gets a portion of the video downloaded if any at all. Super grateful that you all are working on this though- Would also dearly love to be able to download a whole module (to include the quizzes and exercises) for offline learning! Thanks!

Chris P see the answer above! Please contact us if you're having issues so we can work out the bugs. It sounds like you're not waiting for the video to download all of the way. The download progress will be shown in the video progress bar as it downloads.

Thanks, Marshall!

Great app, very useful... But miss a chromecast button to be perfect!!! Will be awesome watch in my Tv. =)

Hi

The ipad app is great. However I have a question though. I don't have WIFI connection sometimes and I prefer to download tutorial and watch offline. Is it possible to do that without signing in the app?

I tried it but it popped a sign-in screen and said "some features are not available without internet connection".

Then I tried to get connected and signed in and clicked on the videos downloaded, and then get offline again, the downloaded videos seem to run ok...does it means that I always have to sign in first in order to watch tutorial offline??

Thanks, Joyce

That's correct, you must be signed in to view your downloaded videos. As long as you stay signed in you'll be fine when you go offline.

Is there an option in the app to stay signed in at all times? I perused through and couldn't find one and I wind up getting logged out somewhat frequently.

You should stay signed in all the time unless you sign out. Please email me at marshall at teamtreehouse so we can get it figured out.

It is great to be able to watch the video offline, but sometimes it is not easy to find a place with WIFI connection for signing in. It will be great if we can skip the sign in step on ipad.

In your case it's recommended to just stay logged into the app at all times.

How about an Android app. I'm a bit annoyed with the fact that there still isn't one. Can we get an update on the status of this? I'm guessing by now that there are no plans to create an app. It doesn't matter if we can access content from the website. Having an app simplifies how we access content.

For those of you who were looking for the Android app, wait no longer!

Yay, I can finally admit that we have an Android app! Great work guys :)

Love this app - but as of the most recent update - I'm prompted to resign in each time I open the app. Even if I just switch apps and come back. I've checked the settings in iOS and I can't seem to figure out what I'm missing. Any ideas how I can set this to remember my login?

Not sure if anyone else is having this issue - but I'm still having regular logout issues with the ipad app. It requires me to relogin on a regular basis.

Thank-you for being so honest about why the android content is not included. I am blown away by Apple's arrogance. It is not acceptable to censor educational materials. It makes me absolutely irate, and makes me very reticent to ever by another Apple product.

So, it'd be great to get an answer on this ipad sign out problem. It does me no good to pay treehouse for pro to download content offline if I can't access it because I'm forced to sign in. The issue is costing you at least $25/month

I'd love a fix on the ipad login problems aswell. When I'm traveling I can't use it. Because I need to login and have no internet connection.

Does the app no longer exist? It’s not in the App Store...

Treehouse removed the IOS Apps for the iPhone and iPad last in 2016. They stated their platform was best used on the web, However, I still have the app on my iPad and haven't removed it. It buggy now. So I would recommend just using the Web. It would be cool to have their repl on an IOS IDE of some sort. I guess one day I might have to build that out. Lol
