General Discussion

'Treehouse Not just for the Novice... Team Treehouse is great for the Sr. Developer too.

I've been a Web developer since '96 HTML, Perl, JS, CSS, PHP, ASP, ASP.Net, Java, C++, etc... and a professional "Desktop & Integrated" software developer since the mid 80s... I've also been developing "Win Mobile/Phone", "Crackberry", iOS, and Android Apps since 2003 (as platforms became available). I started evaluating TeamTreehouse.com as possible training tool for my kids... I can answer questions as they have them, but generally speaking I do not have enough time to "teach" them. I'm thoroughly impressed with the site, and it's delivery of the material. I've picked up several tips/tricks along the way too, which I absolutely love. I've started getting other "seasoned" developers I know to sign up for their "continuing education", or expanding their skill sets... I only wish I could get all of them to click the referral link :) . Another thing I think is great; even when I catch myself doing something a little more advanced like ternary conditionals in-lieu of a full if/then/else block, it lets me keep on going. I think it's fabulous... that said, I think there is an element missing; ASP.Net (as a pretty good share of LOB Apps are in written .Net). Granted, a newbie may not want to spend the money for Visual Studio Pro or better, but there is a free version of the VS IDE. Since with a "Website" (not Web App) gets compiles on the server (on first run) you can develop ASP.Net for free too. Oh, one last thing: I think a bit more attention should be paid to things like Web Services, more complex & nested SQL Queries, Procs , Views & Triggers, "Design Patterns", etc. I'm not a "design pattern kool-aid drinker", but not everyone is going to finish Treehouse and go into business for themselves; some may wind up as FTEs, or Contractors with another company, and nearly every interviewer is going to ask a at least one design pattern question.

Hey Gordon,

Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions. Our goal is to cater to a wide variety of an audience. Just out of curiosity, how old are your kids and how has their experience been with Treehouse?

Thanks!

Great feedback - thanks for sharing! I learned about Treehouse as a continuing-education resource, so that's definitely one of our main goals! We have some longer term goals that include a lot of the things you've mentioned, but we just don't yet have the resources we need for all of that. But hopefully that will change soon, and some more advanced content regarding web services, more complex SQL, and design patterns is in the works. You should see more of this type of stuff as we start to publish more advanced courses for each topic.

@Amit Bijlani My kids are 16, and 14. They haven't started Treehouse yet, My wife (also a member, and long-time developer) just signed my kids up and they plan on starting as soon as they're done with their homework tonight... They are very interested in development, but get almost nothing out of their computer classes at school.

The computer classes in High School these days would be laughable, if it weren't so sad... We should be investing in our kids' futures, and in my opinion Treehouse is a sound investment.

Treehouse is going to be a great tool for them in achieving their goals in life.

Thanks Gordon Jiroux! :) We really appreciate you being a Student.
