Trouble opening MySQL server

I'm tring to follow the Database Foundations course and start a SQL server. I've installed the versions included in the teaching notes (and tried to follow a suggestion for server set-up) but I can't seem to open a connection. System Preferences>MySQL>Start server doesn't work - any suggestions? I've deleted/reinstalled a number of times.

Not sure what i'm doing wrong.

By any chance are you running Skype at the same time or any other service that might be using the same port as SQL server? Try closing that down and reopening the connection.

Thanks for your reply. I don't have Skype running, could it be anything else?

HI Hannah,

go inside the workbench (little home sign in the left corner > click Server Administration on the right side > click startup/shutdown bar on the left side > click start server button in the middle ....

Hope it helps

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately that doesn't work either, I just get the spinning rainbow wheel - it's really not happy. I think its maybe a version issue, i've tried to uninstall/reinstall SQL (it feels like at least 400 times) but to no avail. Really frustrating.

That is really sad !!!!

Can you look which connection parameters you got?

Go to Database > Manage Connections > In the left part of the screen, you should see the "localhost" inside the screen with Stored connections.

I have Standart TCP/IP, Host "localhost" and port 3306.

So, spoke to a dev friend and he managed to solve it so up and running now!

For some reason the server wouldn't launch, so he had to do some manual command magic in the terminal to get it working. I'm pleased because it's something I couldn't, with my very basic knowledge, have solved!

Also, the connection parameters were correct, not entirely sure what happened! Thanks so much for your help.

Hey Hanna,

command magic is the key to salvation, I guess :)

Great, you could get it right
