Trouble understanding JS Functions

I'm having some trouble understanding functions and have a question.

    function ShowMessage(firstName, lastName) {
        alert("Hello " + firstName + " " + lastName);
    }

    ShowMessage("Bob", "Jones");

In the first line the parameters in () would these be considered to be variables? Or could someone explain what they are?

You're right, parameters are essentially a special kind of variable that gets a value assigned to it when the function is called. The value that gets assigned is called the "argument".

Thank you!
