iOS Build a Simple iPhone App with Swift 2.0 Getting Started with iOS Development Swift Recap Part 1

Two different ways to answer this question. Not sure which is correct.

Hi Guys,

there are two way to answer this question, I am not sure which one to use, and why they are both correct.

Version 1:

/code

struct Tag { let name: String } struct Post { let title: String let author: String let tag: Tag

init(title: String, author: String, tag: String){ self.title=title self.author=author self.tag=Tag(tag)

}

let firstPost = Post(title: "IOSDevelopment", author: "Apple", tag: "swift")

Version 2:

struct Tag { let name: String }

struct Post { let title: String let author: String let tag: Tag } let firstPost = Post(title: "IOSDevelopment", author: "Apple", tag: Tag(name:"swift"))

Fundamentally I think what I do not understand is when should I be initializing and when not? Why in this case is it ok to not use init()? Do I need to specifically initialize if a class is not a subclass?

Hey,

Go with the second way. The init() function should be used with structs when you want to initialize the values differently than what the default initializer gives you. This example is basic and you can use the default init(). Docs on Init

struct Tag {
    let name: String
}

struct Post {

    let title: String
    let author: String
    var tag: Tag

    func description() -> String {

        return "\(title) by \(author). Filed under \(tag.name)"
    }

}

let firstPost = Post(title: "Hello", author: "Gary", tag: Tag(name: "Treehouse"))

let postDescription = firstPost.description()
