Using Canvas for clients as a developer - Do I need to pay for it or should the client pay? What's the best practice?

Most themes have a yearly support and update package. Am I liable to keep the theme updated or should the client be making that decision?

Is it necessary to get the theme updates? I am trying to reduce costs for clients - the yearly updates fee gets pricy for new businesses.

Hi. I'm not yet a paid freelance developer however FWIW: According to the Canvas website "The product will continue to work after your license expires or you deactivate a license. You are free to continue using the product for as long as you like, but you will not receive support and updates for the product any longer. "

So provided the theme works and you and your client are happy with it there is no need to pay to renew it. If down the road they want to update their site and want the latest version of the theme they would have to pay. However the theme won't stop working.

As to charging the client I suppose that would depend on your payment structure. Either a flat fee which includes any extras you need to buy or a lower fee but an invoice for the extra expenses. If you are going to charge for themes you need to download it's probably best to be upfront about the cost.
