Using Functions in If Statements

I have the following code:

<?php if(productnumber()==111) { echo "hello world"; } ?>

111 is displayed to the screen, but if I define the if statement:

<?php if(productnumber()==false) { echo "hello world"; } ?>

111hello world is displayed to the screen. Im totally confused why this is happening, please help!!

it may be easier to use

<?php if(productnumber()==true) { echo "hello world"; } ?>
