please check the code below and the comments in it. I assume you have an indentation error. Check more about Indentation in the python docs.

var1 = ["w","o","r","d","h","t"]  #letter t at index 5
var2 = ["g","a","d","e","h"]  #letter e at index -2

var1 = ["w","o","r","d","h","t"] w ==> = 0

var2 = ["g","a","d","e","h"] ==> g = 1
