General Discussion

Very disappointed in Treehouse for dropping WordPress.

First let me say I've been a happy Treehouse customer for two years and one month and will continue to do so.

That being said I just learned that treehouse will soon be dropping WordPress content. (apparently there are a few more courses but after that the well will run dry).
While I've enjoyed many aspects of treehouse, I've always been especially excited whenever a new WordPress course comes out. Granted there are many places to find WordPress resources, there's something about how treehouse presents it's lessons that helps me retain the content I've learned.

In the past I've always felt Treehouse and WordPress shared the values of democratizing the open internet and making tech accessible for people. I'm grateful I now have the skill level to to grasp more advanced WordPress concepts elsewhere but I fear future Treehouse students will really miss out. One reason I've referred friends to treehouse is knowing they'll learn about a CMS that powers such a huge portion of the internet along with the tech that powers it.

Here's hoping the WordPress content will stay up for a while best of luck to Zac.

The WordPress courses (and Zac) are definitely one of the 'high-points' of Treehouse. I haven't heard that they are being phased out... that is very sad news. :(

This was the main reason why I decided to subscribe to Treehouse - for its WordPress theme development courses. I've taken other WordPress courses before on other places but I was told that the Treehouse version was a lot more fun and understanding to go through. I decided to take a break from the WordPress track and switched to PHP track so I can have a better understanding of PHP and how to apply to WordPress later on, but this is shocking news. :(

The news is here, by the way - http://wptavern.com/treehouse-drops-support-for-wordpress-education

This seems bizarre. I don't understand the logic. Hopefully this isn't the future of things to come.

From what I understood from the video posted on WP Tavern, it seems that Treehouse is going on a different direction, aiming towards the "bigger" market, more towards the (raw?) programming/development side (such as .NET, Java, etc.), rather than focusing on the widely-used software like WordPress that doesn't require heavy programming, so to speak. Still disappointed with this news though. :(

I can see the blog posts now "Jane quit her job and thanks to her skills she learned at treehouse she's now questioning her life choices as a mindless corporate drone .Net developer" Ok I'm biased Still I hope Treehouse doesn't abandon what made treehouse appealing for me in the first place.

Wow, bummer to hear about this via the forum and not from any official Treehouse statement. This is really surprising, especially seeing in the forums an active group of people still learning WordPress. The WordPress course is still on my list of courses to take, so hopefully they won't be removing any of the content.

It's also surprising because a large portion of job postings I see are for companies looking for developers that know WordPress. People will still need to learn it somewhere and it's a shame that they won't be able to here.

Anyone have suggestions for Treehouse style Wordpress courses? I'm not a big fan of Lynda and alike

Sadly I don't. I've tried a few, but none even come close to Zac's!

Hey coreyallen and others...

I just came across this site from Zac. It's a poll on what his next video course will be. I'm not sure where (or how) these new courses will be hosted, but they will be his own, which is exciting for him. You can follow him on Twitter or on his Website.

:)

I've taken WordPress courses on both Skillcrush and on Udemy but Zac's courses make them a lot easier to understand, especially with the theme development part. I started following Zac on Twitter when I first started Treehouse and also signed up for his mailing list at his new site last night.

Thanks Jason Anders I just signed up.

Howdy folks!

We'll have more information to share on this subject soon, but for now, please know that we're not abandoning WordPress. We will continue to offer quality content on it to our students for the foreseeable future.

Thanks Rob Allessi that's great news. Not sure if the info we had was incorrect or Treehouse had a change of heart but I'm glad to hear it either way.

I hate it that Zac is gone. He is an enthusiastic teacher that makes learning fun. Most of what I was learning was Wordpress and not sure what direction to go from here.

Very disappointed in Treehouse for dropping WordPress, too!!!
