here you make "setState" a variable of your StopWatch function component by using the "=" operator.
Then in the next function(onStop), when you call setState, the program thinks it is a variable and throws an error.
I can't remember all the rules for compile time scoping but the YDKJS book series will explain to you in detail what happened.
The short answer here is to remove your "=" operator from the snippet of code I pasted above and everything will work fine.

Courses Plus Student 1,720 PointsI think the above answer is overcomplicating things a little.
this.setState is a function that you call and pass it an object literal with the state you want to change.
Instead of calling the function you are reassigning an object to this.setState so that it now references an object and not a function.
So the error is very helpful because this.setState (now an object) is being called as though it is a function which now it isn't.
The above poster was correct in saying that all you needed to do was remove the equals and to call it like a function, however this really has nothing to do with scope as the poster indicted.
Hope that clears things up
Daniel
