my preview button leads to a page that reads "index of/" and a directory of the project folders.I'm able to load the simple_video.html, but not directly by hitting the preview button. anybody know whats going on?

This happens for Nick as well in the video. This is probably because the file is not named index.html.
Web servers usually will look for an index file and will display the contents of the directory if an index file isn't found.

Exactly. Any time there isn't an index.html (or a fallback index.php for Apache, index.asp for Microsoft servers, etc.), the website will generally fall back to a directory listing unless it is specified in the server configuration to not allow standard users access to directories, in which case you'll likely see a 403 forbidden error in your browser.
