You could solve it I think in two different ways, using only one line like you did it, or using more lines.

import re

string = 'Perotto, Pier Giorgio'

names = re.match(r'(?P<last>[\w]+),\s(?P<first>[\s\w]+)', string)
names = re.match(r'''
    (?P<last>[\w]+),\s
    (?P<first>[\s\w]+)
''', string, re.X)

I hope that helps you a bit.
