what about Putty?

It doesn't really matter, in my opinion, how you connect to your remote server. If you have a server on Amazon EC2, ubuntu or Linux AMI, then it doesn't really matter how you are connecting to that server. I connect to my instance all the time using Putty with no problems.

I think the video was more focused on local developing environments. I use Putty to control my Ubuntu VPS, and was pretty much how I learned to use the command line. But, it's not as convenient as a local environment, as I'll always need to push the project onto the remote server every time rather than just running locally.

can't you just copy project files/folder via filezilla?

Yep, that's exactly what I do, and that would be the extra step. You could instead push the project onto your VPS with a git setup too.
