JavaScript AJAX Basics (retiring) AJAX Concepts Finish the AJAX Request

What am I doing wrong in this code?

In app.js, we've added an AJAX callback function. You need to complete the request. Add the code to open the AJAX request using the GET method and pointing to the 'footer.html' file.

app.js
var request = new XMLHttpRequest();
request.onreadystatechange = function () {
  if (request.readyState === 4) {
    document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText;
    request.open("GET", "footer.html");
  }
};
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>AJAX with JavaScript</title>
  <script src="app.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
  <div id="main">
    <h1>AJAX!</h1>
  </div>
  <div id="footer"></div>
</body>
</html>

I tried just "footer" as well.

Hi Laine,

It's just the position of this line:

request.open("GET", "footer.html");

Move it down to after the last closing bracket and that should do it :)

Rich Bagley is absolutely correct. It's simply the placement of your code that's causing the issue.

var request = new XMLHttpRequest();
request.onreadystatechange = function () {
  if (request.readyState === 4) {
    document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText;
  }
};
request.open("GET", "footer.html"); <!-- this is where you need to place your code -->

Thanks, Rich. That worked and, now that I've seen it, makes total sense to not be within the 'if' statement.

No problem :)
