From everything that I've read, it seems to be really important to start doing the work to prove that you can. A portfolio website seems to be a must and can work as part of your resumè. I've also read that helping to contribute to open projects can help to show your ability and experience. The tech industry seems open minded about hiring people without a degree but it requires having ability and having a good place to show it. Getting on social media and making contacts seems to help too, but ultimately employers will want to see what you're able to do.
