PHP

What do you do when you don't understand the question?

in the php beginners you have:

> Modify the command that displays the flavor of ice cream. Instead of it displaying a static piece of text, change it to display the value stored in the 'flavor' variable.

I wrote a variable and it was wrong, so I tried every combination and every single one is wrong. I watched hte video several times and even did a web search, but I can not write a simple variable that meets this requirement. Since I have tried every possible combination of $flavor, my only conclusion is I am not understanding the question.

That being the case is there anyway I can check an answer or hint that would allow me to either sample what you mean. I have no idea if I am answering the correct question, because one of the variations of "" ('') ("") etc muct have been correct. There are not to many ways of writing it.

The topic of hints has come up a few times here on the forum, here are 2 good threads that offer some perspective on the topic:

That being said, if you aren't sure you are understanding a question you can always ask about it here or email the folks at Treehouse help@teamtreehouse.com

Hmm figured out the question but it would not be the first time I have misunderstood. Is there some way of checking that I am actually answering the correct question?

but I must say" who's the dummy " :)

I think the thing is, it is sometime difficult to guess if it is meant to be taken literally or not.

There have been several times I have not been able to figure out the meaning of the question.

In this case I thought you actually wanted the variable to be: "your favorite flavor is";

That would make sense if the conditional is something like: "your least flavor is";

Since the variable is meant to be the flavor $flavor = "vanilla"; , there is no way any statement written with $flavor = "your favorite flavor";?> is Vanilla .... Is never going to be correct.

It is sometimes challenging to figure out exactly what the question means.

I think that is where the confusion is.

I see how that could be confusing, I think in such cases what is needed is better questions instead of hints. I'm also tagging Nick Pettit the Teaching Team lead to get his thoughts on this.

Graham Kite, thank you for the input on this. I can see how this question could be misconstrued. In future courses we will be more aware on the language used.

All good

I am stuck on question 2 i can't get it to work

$flavor = vanilla; echo $flavor; echo "<p>Your favorite flavor of ice cream is "; echo "vanilla"; echo ".</p>"; echo "<p>Randy's favorite flavor is cookie dough, also!</p>";

?>

this code work for me on question 2
