"Hardware accelerated" refers to using the video board or graphics chip to perform calculations that would take longer if done by the main computer. This often helps to make animated motions appear smooth where otherwise they might seem sluggish or jerky. The fact that CSS transforms employ hardware acceleration (where available) is one advantage they offer to visual styling.
