Java

what does it mean to "store" something in a variable?

like omg VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY simple terms please :)

but what does it do once the variable is in the cake tin?

It does nothing, it is just stored in memory. You can then use that to do something with. So you could eat (chocolate cake), you could destroy (chocolate cake).
I may suggest reading up on some basic Comp Sci terms because a lot of your questions are beginner ones (which is fine) but I feel you may be trying to run before you can walk.

The variable is a cake tin, it is empty at this point, nothing is stored inside. If you were to put a chocolate cake inside (aka value) you will have stored it :)
