What does this mean?? This is a quiz question........ "We define the universal selector with a(n) ______________"

Quiz question for basic selectors

This question should be removed or switched to a multiple choice question considering that the correct answer has not been provided and people started requesting the correct answer 5 years ago. It would be understandable if this was a free service, but considering that this is not it should have been fixed already.

Thanks Daniel. Typing the word Asterisk in worked. I just think its really stupid the way the question is written. Answering with * would've made more sense to me personally.

haunguyen: I am native english and whether it was written with an a or an an either way wouldv'e been much easier to understand other than writing the question using a(n) !

Thank you

Sorry Mark, it was not an insult in anyway. I just realized that I can edit the post.

You're welcome, Mark. And yes I know what you mean. Some questions seek the symbol as the answer, others the word itself, and it can be a bit tricky.

Typically, if I get something in a quiz wrong that I'm pretty confident is correct, I'll try the next closest thing (like the word rather than the symbol, in this case).

Anyway, glad you got it working!

Should just use multiple choice for all questions.

The (*) symbol. Thanks for the question.

  • is the answer

Re: Are you a native English speaker? The question was written poorly.

When a beginner has been taught nth() and seen brackets in code before, it's highly likely they will not automatically assume it is mean't to be a or an.

This is a rule in code, write your code in a way that it can be comprehended quickly. Whether the developer is beginner or not, this is a common convention that should have been applied to this.

We define the universal selector with a / an ______________

Would have made much more sense and it would've saved him a lot of time had they just omitted the 'a' and just used 'an' instead.

He also answered it correctly, so this questioned was bugged in the first place.

This is a common occurrence on sites like this. I thought treehouse would be the exception, they need to improve or simply what's the point in bothering to learn.

don't be too sensitive. I meant to make sure that I was not offending him if he is a native speaker. Many people on this site are not native English speakers (including myself). The question was meant as a qualifier, not an insult.

Where is the answer? I tried to fill the blank in a lot and am lost. No idea what the answer is. This whole question should get restarted without the flame war.

What defines a universal selector???????????????

I feel that in the question there should be no (n). As to me the (n) is very confusing. This would be easier to understand.....

We define the universal selector with a ____________

"asterisk", I'm not an english native speaker so it has taken me 10 minutes to understand this post and answer the question .... :-(

This forum remind me about Youtube Comment Section.

Unless you're a developer employee of Treehouse or experienced in teaching this subject, you shouldn't be answering questions,

The (*) symbol. Thanks for the question.

  • That is not helping anyone here and clearly did not answer the question.

Good bye.

Are you sure? I swear that teamtreehouse is encouraging students to help out.

I apologize to you ahead of time Maam, but you should use the "add comment" function instead of keep posting your comments as "answers".

Maybe I should, but the words 'Add comment' in itself is stupid. It should be 'Reply' because 'Add comment' can be referred to 'adding the comment to this board'. Learn UX and you might understand.

Of course they would encourage students, which is primarily in their own favour.

This is why there are so many BAD programmers/developers out there, because there aren't enough skilled / experienced Devs helping out the new guys in forums. And some might say; why should they wan't to anyway? I see it as treehouse's responsibility to check their lessons.

TeamTreeHouse teachers and Mods have been very generous with their time and resources, but they are a startup and doing the best that they can, I don't see a legitimate reason why you are bad mouthing them. Are you having a bad day, Ma'am?

Thanks for that, knew it was an * but didn't understand why it has to be answered with brackets around the * let alone why there is an n with brackets around it i.e (n) When I answered the question first time i just put * and it came up wrong

the brackets in my answer was just to bring attention to the asterisk, I could had used "*", but that is difficult to see.

Just tried answering the question with (*) but still didn't work. pretty sure there must be a bug?

just * works just now

Hey Mark,

I see what you're saying about the "n". Try this: Spell out "asterisk". That's why the "n" is placed in parentheses, it's purely grammatical.
