There you go

function max(x, y) {
  var test = 0;
  if (x > y) {
    test = x;
  }else {
    test = y;
  }
  return test;
}

or even shorter

function max(x, y) {

  if (x > y) {
    return x;
  }else {
    return y;
  }

}

The challange didnt wanted that alert that you used
