What is the best way to get work as a web developer?

I'm currently taking the front end web developer track and it has the student creating a online portfolio, I'm wondering what is the best way to get work in order to fill my portfolio and get it online?

Hello Dean,

I think a good way to fill your portfolio is to work on small projects.

First, make a portfolio from scratch, that's a good way to learn, you'll do mistakes, you're not perfect and you'll learn from your mistakes. The courses on Treehouse are amazing, but you'll need to make mistakes and learn from them to improve your skills. You really need to make it from scratch, that's gonna be hard, but that's the best way to learn in my opinion.

Then you can make some small projects like a website about your passion, a plugin to display the weather, a website for a member of your family, ... the only limit is your imagination. Don't worry to make your code perfect, it wont be at the first time, all you need to do is to practice on projects, learn more about your mistakes and then to perfect your previous projects.

And maybe one day, someone is going to call you to make a website for him because he liked your portfolio that you made from scratch :)

Hope that helped you,

have a nice day Dean :)

Thanks for such a fast reply, Great answer too.

I'll definitely take this on board and work on a portfolio from scratch, I have some ideas that I would like to put into practice (typography and layouts). Also would it be better to work on small projects first so I have work to show in my portfolio or is it okay to have a empty portfolio until I have work to show?

Thanks again for the great reply.

you're welcome :)

You can work on your portfolio locally when you learned basics on Treehouse. You don't have to put it online directly. The really advice that i wanted to give you is to practice, to make mistakes and to learn from them :) That's the same as learning a foreign language, you need to practice it to learn it!

Happy coding !

I write as a hobby, and so I've made up a few characters who own their own businesses. One of my idea's when I have time to build my own portfolio site is to make sites for some of them who run their own businesses, and link them to the portfolio.

Do state that they are fake business accounts, but by showcasing what you can do, that will help demonstrate what your skill-sets.

That's a great idea. I might have to adopt that idea and work on some fake clients my self.
