What route to take?

I am completely new to all of this.

I took the Code Academy HTML and CSS course and then just finished the HTML course here on Treehouse.

My ultimate goal is to be able to build websites using WordPress for clients and be able to do this on the side, then eventually maybe Freelance full time.

My initial thought was to learn everything I can about HTML, CSS, then PHP. Is this right?

Or should I just focus on the WordPress tracks?

Personally, I would indeed go got the Web Design Track and then follow this with

Learn Wordpress PhP Wordpress Development. Follow that path and you won't go wrong.

In the meantime as you're going through these tracks do have a look for other Courses and Workshops in rthe library that you might be interested. Some course in the tracks are interchangable between each other and some don't appear in the tracks at all. :-)

Awesome Jonathan. Thanks for the clarity.

It's overwhelming with all the options sometimes and don't want to waste time with stuff that doesn't matter too much when I can spend a good amount of time on things that do matter.

Appreciate the reply!

If time is an issue, don't be put off if it doesn't seem like you're learning enough PHP or Wordpress. The grounding you'll get in HTML and CSS will be just as important IMO :-)

There is nothing wrong with starting with HTML CSS and PHP especially if you wan to do WP dev. Learning how WP works is also a great idea. There is a track called learn WP. I would suggest that you take that along with everything else. I would also add if you have the time, to you look at MIT courses. they have a lot of lectures free online and I highly recommend taking them. they will teach you Python, but more importantly it will give you the knowledge of what you are doing, and a deeper understanding of how programs are working and teaches you how to think like a computer scientist.

It might sound daunting, or overkill, but it will make you a better programmer in the end. this is my two cents, I hope it helps.

Thanks Jacob!

What would you say would be the best step by step route?

I work all day and have the family time until about 830. I have been trying to get some learning done between 9-11 or 12.

Just trying to use my time wisely.

Tim,

Its all good man, I would set up the process by having learning days and coding days. So create a schedule that work with your life first. set days were you just learn coding, i.e. on Treehouse, wherever, or both. Also find what is your learning style!! for me I need to write everything down in order to know what is going on. if you already know what works best for you Awesome. then have alternate days of learning then coding, Code what you learned the prior day. remember learn at your pace, HTML and CSS are the founding elements. start with that and work your way up.

its all about what you want to do. you want to be a WP dev guy right? that s totally cool. first understand HTML and CSS. you can also take the course learn WP while you learn HTML/CSS, that's not going to hurt. once you have gotten a grasp then focus on both PHP and WP dev. Just remember first set up a plan of attack on how to learn, secondly execute that plan by staring with the basics and move on up. and third don't stop. if there is anything else you have questions with please ask. that is what the forum is there for.

Awesome Jacob!

I'll definitely be putting all this awesome advice to use!

Right on! anytime!
