When I click on portfolio it does not turn into dark green when I click on it. But wnen I hover over it it turns green.

Remember in your html file you have to update which list item of the navigation gets the class="selected". So just make sure in each of your html pages u have the class="selected" on the right list item. If not please post your work space.

Can you post your main.css also it will really help.
