when = is an assignment or an "equal to" operator?

I saw for enum pattern matching when the if statements were used, for example

if case .Dime = coin {

print(something) }

the '=' operand represents equal to and not an assignment. Whereas if I was writing this line of code without an enum case '==' this is how I would need to represent equal to.

Can someone clarify when and why we do this?
