On the left side of the screen you'll see the 4 icons. The second one down is something called 'Tracks'. What Treehouse offers is a guide through its courses on how to achieve an overall goal (in your case a web designer or web developer). When you go to the 'Tracks' page the first 2 tracks are 'Become a Web Designer' and 'Become a Web Developer'. Click the 'Learn More' button and have a little look around to see which one you want to start first or you can try both! If you feel that that track isn't for you, simply go to the specific track page and click 'Leave Track'.

Good Luck in the future and I hope you enjoy learning HTML, CSS & JavaScript

thx alot for ur time

i only need a quick guide like for example i learned now that first ever steps are to learn html css and javascript ...just need to learn the rest and wish someone can mention them quickly .

thx alot for ur time

Sabrek,

I was in your shoes a year ago. I wanted to get out of what I was doing and do web stuff instead, but I only knew the little HTML I remembered from what I learned back in fourth grade. So I started teaching myself from scratch.

Start with HTML. Learn it well. Everything else build off of HTML so you really need to know it well. It's fairly simple so it shouldn't take long, and don't worry too much if you don't feel completely comfortable with it early on. You'll get lots of practice with it when working with almost anything else.

CSS is important and useful, and you should know it for a web design/development. In my experience, you're kind of expected to have a decent understanding of it.

Beyond HTML and CSS, it really depends on your strengthens. I don't have a great visual sense, so I stick more to development than design, but it depends on you. I'd say learn at least some of everything as it will help you figure out a direction.

For development, Javascript and PHP are solid places to start. Also, working with jQuery and Wordpress are good to know.

Beyond those basics, read everything. Try to figure out how things work and go together. Learn about all the great applications, libraries, etc that are out there. The more you start looking and wondering, searching and reading, and generally asking questions and getting answers, the more it will help you. You can do a lot of this by trying to build something before you know how to, and searching the web repeatedly when you have questions. It will really push you to understand, to figure things out, and to make things work.

Some great resources (in my opinion):

  • Treehouse - You're here, so I figure you already know what it is
  • Learnable - Another video tutorial site. Also has screencasts and books
  • Codeschool - More cool video courses
  • Tuts+ - Loads of tutorial articles. I find myself on here all the time
  • Stack Overflow - Q&A for developers. Tons of info here, and lots of people willing to help
  • Github - Version Control hosting, and open-source community. This may not be awesome to you yet, but it will be
  • W3Schools - Not always perfect, but they have some great references for HTML & CSS

There's plenty more cool stuff out there, but these are the ones that came to mind. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Stephen Crockett - As w3schools has some issues with credibility we try to never link newbies to them here on the forum. Instead link to html dog or Shaw Howe's Beginner's Guide to HTML & CSS

My advise is to decide which you want to be. A designer or a developer? Do you have the artistic flair that will make you a good designer, if not, then focus on development and make some contacts within the design world. You can have the most functional best coded site on Earth but if it looks like crud, client isn't going to pay you and potential clients aren't going to hire you.

All the client sees is the design, they don't know or care about code or functionality. They just want it to look the bomb and do what they've asked.

hello

thank u so much guys for reply really helpful i wouldnt say i got a designer flair to be honest im more attracted to developer but the thing is ....i wish to one day become a freelancer web developer and designer....and my fear is that i wont find customers that only would need a developer and that all projects would require a mix of the two :(
