Which track to choose, after front end web development ?

Hi there. I`m new around here, currently working on finishing the web design track, almost there. After that, i am definetely going with the front end track, since they compliment each other very well. Lets say i wonna stay in the front end department, and not touch any server side languages you offer here.

Do you think that the content these two tracks offer is enough to actually build my own portfolio and later get a job in the front end field ?

Should i learn any server side languages/tracks you offer here, or would it just be a waste of precious time, if i wonna stick to the front end department side of things.

Sorry for the bad english, not a native speaker...

I am in a similar position, I am midway through the front-end development track and loving it! The very minimum I would suggest is to do this track as, in terms of web design, front end is essential, even if it isn't the actual field you eventually work in.

In terms of future jobs, I've noticed that a lot of jobs advertising as 'Front-End Web Developer' roles or similar are actually looking for someone who has some experience of back end functions as well, so learning those would only enhance career prospects. I suppose if you are looking to move into app development then maybe there are some courses on Treehouse which would be a waste of time, but you would need to have a good idea of what you want to end up with before starting a new track.

Personally for me, I am building multiple websites currently, some with simple front-end code, others requiring back end servers and such to run, therefore I am covering a lot of ground on Treehouse for this, but, as I said before, you need to have a clear idea of what it is you want to get out of the course before taking it, otherwise it will be a waste of time.

Hope this helps!

It does help Ben, tnx. I suppose when i finish the front end track, it would be best if i choose one of the server side languages offered here. What i do know, is that i am definetely going to be focusing on one language only, and mastering that before i move on to something else. Any recommendations on which language to choose as a good starting one, would be appreciated.

A fairly common question, and I assume you are referring to the choice between PHP, Python and Ruby (the current options on Treehouse). Deciding which one to learn does really depend on what it will be used for, and how best you learn. I've had a lot of experience with PHP so I prefer this at the moment but there are advantages to all. The web link below displays in detail how each one stacks up in different areas, particularly those which employers look out for. Check it out:

Markovelkavrh, I think that the first two tracks would give you enough start making good web-sites. As for back-end I'm doing the ruby track and I love the syntax. Also your English is excellent compared to some posts that I read.

Do you guys have any idea why my name is not seperated from my surname. Looks weird without spaces. Sorry for the offtopic...

You should be able to go to your profile and go to the "Edit profile". You might want to add a space at the end of you first name. Also did you se there are separate lines for your first and last name?

Lets see if changing my name does the trick...

The post still uses my old name, and not the new, saved one. Weird. Maybe a cookie reset is in order...

Did it work else ware?

Working fine, had a little problem with an unchecked checkbox...

Great, I'm glad you got it fixed!
