Why did we use Generics here?

protocol Person {
    var name: String {get}
    var homeTown: String {get}
    var height: Double {get}
}

// Without Generics
func getPersonalInfo(person: Person) -> String {
    return ("You have selected \(person.name) from \(person.homeTown)")
}

//With Generics 
func getPersonalInfoT <T: Person>(person: T) -> String {
    return ("You have selected \(person.name) from \(person.homeTown)")
}

What's the difference, they both work, I still can't get it when to use Generics, especially for above example
