Why Did You Get Your First Macintosh?

I'am making a(n) documentary on Macintoshes, if you can remember the reason why you got your first Mac, please post it in this discussion

Just tired of the window saga, only had my mac book pro for a year, but I am happy

thanks roywurgley

MacBook Pro, early 2011. Totally a newcomer ;)

Thanks, do you remember why you got a mac?

Front-end development :) As far as I knew, that was the best tool for the job, and still is.

I got my Macbook pro back in 2006 and still running strong. As soon as I got out of H.S, I started going to school for Graphic design. I always thought the best computer for designers was a Mac, so I saved money for a couple of months and got it.

Liked the user interface better, had only had windows xp before I got mine in 2010.

needed one for iOS development

My first MacIntosh was actually a Lisa (google it) with a set of disks to make it run like a mac. I bought the Lisa used for $50 (it originally went on the market for 10k) to use in college back in '86. It was huge - it must have weighed 50 pounds. I sold it at the end of the year for $50, and I wish I still had it - it's worth $3k today...I miss that machine. I had the manuals, box and everything. Still have my floppies though; when floppies started to go away I moved everything to my Zip drive...

thank you everyone who commented, it will help with my documentary!

I bought a macbook pro in college in 2005 because the journalism/advertising labs at Penn State were mac based and I was used to learning the adobe creative suite on them. My job at a media production house currently uses macs and is an all mac shop. I recently bought a desktop dell for personal use. I mainly bought a windows based computer due to cost and the fact I wanted more options for gaming. I already have a work issued macbook pro. Everyone says that macs are better at handling creative pursuits and i'd love for someone to explain to me specifically why they prefer one over the other. I use both and I don't see much of a difference other than getting used to two operating systems and the speed in which you navigate around them. The only complaint I have regarding PCs in the PC/Mac debate is that PCs are much less secure from viruses. That is the MAIN difference I have come across that bugs me. Other than that it just seems to be a personal preference and ability to be flexible/adapt to very different Operating Systems.

There isn't one, it's about mind share.

> is that PCs are much less secure from viruses

The Windows install base is about 10x the size of the OS X, so it has a much smaller target painted on it's back, the number of security vulnerabilities across Windows, OS X & Linux are relatively similar.

Personally, I dislike Windows as an operating system. It feels clunky, and I've used both Windows and OS X. Granted, both OSs have their use cases. For me, the software I use on a daily basis to get my work done: Xcode, Transmit, Sparrow, the Omni suite of products, Sketch... They're all well designed and are Mac-only. Being POSIX-compatible makes life easy too, sometimes.

However, I've got to agree with James Barnett on the point about threats. If it was just as widely used, it would have a larger target. Not that it doesn't already: Macs have had their fair share of security threats in the past.

In the past 5 years software written for developers on OS X has made it a pretty good fit for that use case.

Thanks everyone. I'm re-adjusting myself to the windows environment. As I said, I use both. This helps in giving me some more concrete and fleshed out opinions.

Windows Vista did it to me. It was so poorly done and such a mess that I upgraded to a MacBook (white plastic) in 2007, and that computer still runs!

PC VS. MAC? ?
