Why do I have to change mapStateToProps to get it working

In the course the mapStateToProps didn't include a return statement. To get it to work I had to rewrite it to:

const mapStateToProps = (state) => {
  return {
    players: state
  }
}

Also I had to do the same for the playerComponents variable. When I wrap the JSX element with return () it works.

Is it possible to explain to me why I had to do this ?
