Why do we have to give the 'list' value to the function?

Why do we have to give the 'list' value to the function 'printList' if the 'list' is not defined anywhere?

var playList = [
  'I Did It My Way',
  'Respect',
  'Imagine',
  'Born to Run',
  'Louie Louie',
  'Maybellene'
];

function print(message) {
  document.write(message);
}
function printList( list ) {
  var listHTML = '<ol>';
  for ( var i = 0; i < list.length; i+=1 ) {
    listHTML += '<li>' + list[i] + '</li>';
     }
  listHTML += '</ol>';
    print(listHTML);
    }

printList(playList);

Hi Anna, 'list ' is a Parmater(or placeholder) It exists only inside the function scope ( in this case, between the two curlybraces {} )

After invoking this Funktion you assign what ever value you like to it Parameter (in other words/ fill the placeholder 'list' with the value of 'playList' )

Thanks!
