Why do we have to use the function prepareForSegue when we can just pass data using a global variable?

In Swift, I don't get why we have use the complex function prepareForSegue() and whatever inside when we can just declare the variable as global outside the class. Like this:

import UIKit

var theText: String?

class ViewController: UIViewController { @IBOulet var myText: UILabel! override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() myText.text = theText! } }
