Why do we need to create a new variable $ID and assign the information of $item in it?

If $ID is for storing the information of $item, why do we have to create variable $ID? Are there any important details making $ID necessary that I failed to see?

actually you don't have to, but it's more readable and maintainable if you do so. i'm not expert with PHP but variable in another computer languages like JavaScript works the same as PHP.

if i'm wrong correct me :) ~ thanks.
